What Else You Should Know Before Booking
- The San Blas Islands are part of the Guna Yala comarca, an autonomous region governed by the indigenous Guna people. Unlike typical tourist destinations, the area is not heavily developed – and that’s exactly what gives it its charm. There are no big resorts, shopping strips, or nightlife spots. Instead, the Guna people invite you to experience their land, sea, and culture on their terms, with simplicity, authenticity, and deep respect for nature. Infrastructure is minimal, so come with an open mind and an appreciation for a different way of life.
- All islands in Guna Yala have owners, even the seemingly unhabited ones. This includes also the coconuts you find there. Coconuts are valued as traditional currency by the Guna people. Out of respect for their culture, do not take coconuts without permission.
- Fresh water is a limited resource on the islands and catamarans. Please use water -including showers – carefully and thoughtfully.
- Many of the products and ingredients used for your meals are local, fresh, and sourced from nearby communities which supports the local indigenous families. Imported goods require planning and logistics, so your experience is adapted to the environment and its limitations. Any special wish or diaetry restrictions should be communicated at the booking.
- Many of the islands you’ll visit are untouched and naturally beautiful. However, because most are uninhabited, there’s no one to clean the beaches daily – so occasionally, ocean currents may bring in some marine debris.
- A catamaran trip is a lot about coexistence in a relatively small space. The crew lives with you on the boat—they cook, sail, clean, and guide you. They are more than just emplyees at your service; they become your team and family during the trip. They share stories, navigate the seas, and do everything possible to make your journey special and safe, even in a challenging environment without the amenities of a fully developed tourist destination. For example, there are no large marinas to dock at each evening or restaurants to visit after dark.
- We hope you embrace this experience with an open mind, respect, empathy when things aren’t perfect, and a spirit of cooperation with the people who dedicate themselves to creating an unforgettable adventure.
