Where You’ll Sleep: Cabins on Isla Franklin
Accommodation on Isla Franklin is all about simplicity, comfort, and staying close to nature — just like the Guna have lived for centuries. You won’t find a 5-star resort here. Instead, expect something better: authentic island charm, sea breezes, and the chance to fall asleep to the sound of waves or palm trees swaying above you and waking up in front of the ocean.
There are two main types of cabins available:

Beachfront Wooden Cabins
Our most popular cabin type – Located right on the beach with a full sea view, these cabins are perfect if you want to wake up to the sound of the ocean.
- Sea-facing porches, ideal for relaxing or reading a book
- Built slightly above ground for better airflow
- Wooden floors and palm-thatched roofs for natural ventilation
- This cabin type is a favorite among travelers and sells out quickly due to limited availability — so it’s best to book in advance if you want it.
Traditional Guna-Style Cabins
These cabins reflect the traditional way many Guna families still build their homes today. They offer a simple and authentic island experience.
- Made from wooden sticks and natural palm materials
- Built directly on the sand — you’ll literally have your feet in it
- Most are set just behind the beachfront cabins, with easy beach access.
All accommodations share the collective bathrooms and showers.

They act as guides, translators, and companions, making your experience more personal and connected.
Most speak English and often other languages, helping bridge any gaps between travelers and the local family.
Cultural highlights include:
- Buying handmade Molas or traditional bracelets during community tours

Advice when visiting a Guna community: dress modestly in villages, ask before taking photos, and embrace the island’s natural simplicity.

Staying overnight on Franklin Island – Important Things to Know Before You Go
Staying overnight means embracing nature and a simpler way of life. It’s a back-to-basics experience that many travelers find refreshing. Here are some tips that are good to know in advance to help you pack, prepare, and set the right expectations for this kind of experience. While most of these tips apply to other islands in San Blas as well, a few are specific to Franklin.
Electricity & Charging
- Electricity runs from around 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- Some cabins have a plug for charging, others do not.
- You can charge your phone or devices in the communal rancho, where a multi-socket plug is available.
- We recommend bringing a fully charged power bank for added convenience, if possible solar rechargeable.
Connectivity
- Cell service is limited and unreliable — don’t count on it for regular use.
- Wi-Fi is usually available via Starlink for a small fee. However, due to island or weather conditions, it may be temporarily unavailable at times.
Food & Dietary Notes
- Meals are simple Guna-style dishes (typically fresh fish, rice, and plantains).
- If you have dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance, so we can do our best to accommodate your needs.
Island Mindset
- Stay open-minded — this is a back-to-basics experience.
- Don’t expect luxury standards. The Guna are generously inviting you into their way of life, and they do their best to make guests feel welcome.
- If you need high-end comfort, strong showers, or reliable Wi-Fi, an overnight stay might not be the right fit. Instead, consider our One-Day Tour Package — it’s a great way to experience the beauty of San Blas while staying within your comfort zone.
Trash & Sustainability
- Trash disposal is a challenge on the islands.
- Please avoid bringing unnecessary packaging as recycling is a challenge on the islands. If possible, take your trash back to Panama City where it can be properly recycled.
Nature
- Expect to share space with nature. You might see small crabs or insects around.
- Keep your bags closed, and avoid leaving food or drinks open in your cabin to prevent attracting animals.
