A San Blas day trip is one of the most unforgettable experiences — and a must-see destination — while visiting Panama. Imagine crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and tiny islands scattered across the Caribbean — all just a few hours from Panama City.

The San Blas Islands, officially known as Guna Yala, are home to over 365 islands and an indigenous culture that has preserved its traditions for centuries. In this guide, you’ll discover what to expect on a one-day tour — from how to get there and what’s included, to why this is our most popular package.

Morning Pickup from Panama City and Jungle Drive to the San Blas Coast

Your San Blas adventure starts early with a 5:00 AM hotel or residence pickup in Panama City. You’ll ride in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4×4 vehicle for about 2.5–3 hours through scenic countryside until you reach the port in Guna Yala.

On the way to Guna Yala, we’re happy to make a couple of optional stops if you need anything. There’s a supermarket right along the highway where you can grab some snacks or use the restroom before we head deeper into the drive. A bit further along, there’s also a gas station where we can stop if needed—this is the last chance to stretch your legs before we hit the more remote road that leads to Guna Yala. From there, the drive gets a bit more adventurous as we head into the jungle. The road can be winding and steep in some parts, but no worries—our drivers know it like the back of their hand. If you’re lucky, you might spot a sloth chilling in a tree or even crossing the road. Every now and then, we even catch a glimpse of a toucan!

Important: Bring your passport, as it’s required at the Guna Yala checkpoint when we enter the Guna Yala territory.

Shared or Private Car Options

Each vehicle used for the San Blas day trip comfortably seats up to 6 passengers. By default, the ride is shared with other travelers, which is a great way to meet fellow travelers.

Prefer a More Private Car Ride?
No problem! If you’re traveling with fewer than 6 people and would rather not share the ride, you can request a private car for an additional cost. It’s a great option for couples, families, or anyone looking for extra comfort and flexibility.

Heading to the San Blas Islands by Speedboat

Once you arrive at the port, your driver will guide you to the waiting area for your boat transfer and introduce you to your tour guide, who will accompany you for the rest of your island experience.

From there, you’ll board a shared speedboat

with twin 75-horsepower engines that will take you directly to your first island in the Caribbean Sea of San Blas (Guna Yala). Depending on the boat’s size, it usually carries around 24 passengers, plus a captain and an assistant.

Since different boats go to different islands, it’s important to stay with the guide you were introduced to. Your fellow car passengers may not be on the same boat, as they might be heading to a different destination.

The boat ride takes around 30 to 40 minutes and is part of the experience itself — you’ll cruise past a handful of postcard-perfect islands with crystal-clear water and white sand beaches. It’s the perfect way to kick off your time in paradise.

If you prefer a more private experience, you can also book a boat exclusively for you and your family, friends, or partner — ideal for those wanting a more intimate experience.

Island Hopping Itinerary – What’s Included in Your San Blas Day Tour

Our San Blas day tour package includes visits to 3 spots: 2 beautiful islands and a stop at the famous natural swimming pool.

🌴 Stop 1: Relax on a Postcard-Perfect Island

Swim, snorkel, or just relax under a palm tree – ideal for disconnecting.

We usually spend the first half of the tour on the first island, then head to a second island around midday for lunch and some extra time to relax on the beach. Please follow your tour guide’s instructions and be punctual when it’s time to return to the boat. It’s usually easy to spot your guide and boat since the islands are quite small.

🐠 Stop 2: Lunch & Local Culture

On the second island, you’ll enjoy a traditional Guna Yala-style lunch—usually fresh grilled or fried fish served with coconut rice or plantains and a side of salad. Vegetarian options are available too; just be sure to let us know about any dietary preferences or restrictions in advance so we can accommodate you.

You’ll also have the chance to learn about the indigenous Guna people and explore the famous Mola, a traditional handcrafted textile made by Guna women and used in their clothing. It makes a perfect, authentic souvenir from San Blas.

🐚 Stop 3: Natural Swimming Pool

This shallow sandbar in the middle of the sea is a must-see. Wade through crystal-clear water, and if you’re lucky, you might spot starfish. It’s the perfect place to take surreal photos that look like you’re standing right on the ocean.

A Quick Note About Starfish: We know it can be super tempting to pick up a starfish for a photo – especially when you see others doing it, even some locals. But please don’t lift them out of the water. Starfish are incredibly sensitive, and taking them out, even for a few seconds, can seriously stress and harm them. Let’s help keep the ocean life safe and thriving by just admiring these beautiful creatures where they belong: in the water.
