How many people are on a San Blas day tour (minimum and maximum group size)?

There’s no minimum. You’ll travel from Panama City by 4×4 with up to 6 other travelers in the same car, then board a boat at the Guna Yala port that takes you to the islands. The boat has a maximum capacity between 15 of 24 people depending of the boat.

Are your rates based on a minimum number of travelers?

Our rates are calculated for a minimum of 1 person.

Why is the pick-up for San Blas tours so early (5:00 AM)?

You must be ready at 5:00 am because we collect all travelers from several different hotels (between 5:00 AM to 5:30 AM). You might be the first stop. Remember that transportation is shared with other travelers (unless you book private transportation) so please be kind and be ready. It helps us leave early and all of you will enjoy more time on the islands. If you’re not ready when the driver arrives, the vehicle will need to continue the route, and your spot will be forfeited without refund.

Can you pick me up later than 5:00 AM?

For shared tours, we cannot offer a later pick-up. Standard pick-up runs from 5:00 to 5:30 AM to ensure a smooth journey for everyone and to maximize your time on the islands. The drive from Panama City to the port takes about 2.5–3 hours, and the boats leave on a fixed schedule – leaving later could risk missing the boat or delaying the group.

If you book a private transfer, we can arrange a slightly later pick-up, though we still recommend an early departure to make the most of your day in San Blas.

What type of vehicle is used to drive to San Blas?

All transportation to San Blas is made in 4×4 cars, that carry up to 6 persons. 4×4 SUVs are required for the winding mountain roads to San Blas and are mandated by the Guna Yala Congress. Regular cars are not suitable and will be denied entry at the Guna Yala checkpoint.

How many people fit in the car to San Blas?

For shared San Blas tours, each 4×4 vehicle carries up to 6 passengers. To ensure a comfortable ride from Panama City to the port, the seating is arranged as follows:

  • 1 person in the front passenger seat next to the driver
  • 3 people in the rear seats of the first row
  • 2 people in the rear seats of the second row

For private tours, the vehicle is dedicated to your group, giving you more flexibility and space.

Why do I need to bring my original passport or ID to San Blas?

Bringing your original identification is required because entry to Guna Yala (the San Blas region) is strictly controlled by local authorities.

  • Panamanians or residents of Panama must bring their original national ID (cédula).
  • Foreign tourists must bring their original passport with a valid immigration stamp.

Copies or digital versions of IDs or passports are not accepted at the Guna Yala border checkpoint. Failure to present the original document will result in denied entry.

Why do you charge an entrance fee?

More than a fee, it is a contribution to support different programs in the Guna Yala region, including community maintenance, infrastructure, island preservation, cultural initiatives, and education.

All visitors to the San Blas Islands must pay this fee directly at the Guna Yala border checkpoint. It is collected by the local Guna authorities and cannot be included in tour prices or pre-paid online. Paying on-site ensures the funds go directly to the communities and help maintain the islands for future visitors.

Important: There are no ATMs available in San Blas, so bringing cash in USD is essential. Other currencies or cards are not accepted at the checkpoint.

What is the boat like for the San Blas tour?

The tour boats are sturdy fiberglass boats with outboard motors. Each boat is covered, providing shade during the ride, and can comfortably seat up between 15 to 24 adults depending on the boat

For your safety, all boats are equipped with life jackets, so you can enjoy your journey between the islands with peace of mind.

If I have an issue, how do I contact you?

You will always have a guide with you on the tour to assist with any situation that arises.

In case of an emergency requiring an early departure, our boat can take you back to the port, where a vehicle will be ready to transfer you to the city. Please note that the cost of this early transfer is covered by the traveler.

Can the sea be rough or choppy during the San Blas tour?

Sea conditions in San Blas vary depending on the season:

  • From December to March, the wind direction changes, causing the sea to be a bit more choppy.
  • From April to November, the wind comes from the south of Panama, making the sea generally calm.

Our boats are designed for stability and comfort, and covered seating provides protection from sun and spray. If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider bringing motion-sickness medication.

Is it recommended to travel from December to March?

Absolutely! December to March is the dry season, which means plenty of sunshine and minimal rain, making it the most popular time to visit. However, San Blas can be enjoyed year-round. It’s generally warm and sunny, with some months experiencing short rain showers during the day.

Will I have signal or phone service on the island?

Phone and internet service on the San Blas Islands can be unreliable and depends on your location within Guna Yala. Most areas have signals for Tigo and Mas Movil, so if staying connected is important, it’s a good idea to get a SIM card from one of these providers before your trip.

What types of food will I eat on a San Blas Islands tour?
  • Day Tours: Lunch usually includes fish catch of the day or chicken, served with patacones (fried plantains) and a side of salad.
  • Overnight Tours: All meals are freshly prepared daily by the island cook. Fish is the catch of the day. The set menu typically features freshly caught fish or chicken, served with rice or fried plantains or potatoes and salad. Breakfasts are simple, usually including eggs, bread, fruit, and coffee or tea.

All meals follow a preset menu, but availability may vary depending on locally sourced ingredients. The cuisine is simple, fresh, and reflects traditional Panamanian flavors.

Optional lobster lunch available for an additional fee

Special dietary needs: Please communicate vegetarian or other dietary restrictions in advance, so the island team can accommodate your preferences.

Are there mosquitoes on the San Blas Islands? Do I need to bring repellent?

There are usually no mosquitoes on the islands themselves, thanks to the sea breeze that keeps them away. However, at the port, especially from March to November you may encounter some. We recommend bringing insect repellent, and if you have sensitive skin, long-sleeved clothing can also help you stay comfortable. We recommend bringing insect repellent for comfort, particularly if you’re staying overnight.

Can I bring a cooler to the San Blas Islands?

Small coolers are allowed, and many travelers bring drinks or snacks to enjoy during their trip. Large coolers are not recommended, as transportation space is limited and storage on the islands is very basic.

Please remember to take any trash back with you to help keep the islands clean and beautiful.

Is it safe for female solo travelers to visit the San Blas Islands?

Yes, the San Blas Islands are considered safe for female solo travelers. Most visitors join shared tours, where you’ll be traveling in a small group by car and boat, and spending the day with other guests. This makes it easy to meet people while feeling secure throughout your trip.

Many female solo travelers also choose overnight stays, especially on social islands like Franklin Island, where you can connect with like-minded travelers in a friendly, welcoming environment. Private tours are available as well if you prefer more control and privacy during your visit.

Who lives on the San Blas Islands?

The Guna have lived in the region for centuries, maintaining their traditional way of life, including their customs, crafts, and governance, while allowing parts of the islands to visitors. Meeting the Guna and experiencing their culture is one of the highlights of visiting San Blas.
